OIG Compliance

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) protects the integrity of the Department of Health and Human Services programs through regulations aimed at identifying fraud, waste and abuse within the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceutical companies have a variety of remunerative relationships with people in a position to refer, order, prescribe, or influence the referral of pharmaceutical products. Representatives cultivate relationships with physicians in a position to generate business for them through a variety of practices, including gifts, entertainment and personal services compensation. These activities have a high potential for fraud and abuse and, historically, have generated a substantial number of anti-kickback convictions. If the remuneration is intended to generate any federal health care business, it potentially violates the anti-kickback statute.
